Welcome to the Biography page
Keith Barrell NDD. ATC. (London)

Keith BarrellBorn in 1939, and initially trained at Rochdale School of Art, I moved down to Hammersmith College of Art to study Sculpture at Special Level, before finally going on to Hornsey College of Art to complete my PGCE qualification.

My entire professional career has been spent within the field of Art Education at all levels, having worked,

  • As Head of the Art Department in a London Comprehensive (11-18);
  • As Lecturer in a London Polytechnic, I established a CNAA Degree Course in Ceramics for Secondary Art Teachers;
  • As Inspector and Adviser with responsibility for Art and Design education across all teaching/learning establishments for the Kent Education Authority.

I took advantage of taking early retirement in 1989 in order to take on work as an independent Art Consultant, and at the same time to return to teaching in a 11-18 comprehensive school. Subsequently I am now a Principal Examiner for GCSE/AS/A2, and am concentrating on my own studio practice.

I have always produced my own creative work in conjunction with my teaching roles during my forty year career in Art & Design Education.

More recently since my retirement I have developed my skills as a Painter using Watercolour, Inks and Acrylics as my media. I continue to build some ceramic sculpture that are suitable as garden works, and I am developing new works from Handmade Watercolour paper, Warriors.

My Watercolours encapsulate an established interest in the male form as exemplified in the Classical sculpture of Greece and Rome. Other influences are the figurative works of traditional sculptors, such as Moore, Frink and Butler, whose great concern for the refinement and embellishment of surface when creating their works, was paramount.
